Valerie Pierce
I have been interested in biology and how biological things work since I was a kid. I've studied soil fungi, plants and DNA fingerprinted lizards. I remember manual sequencing with S35. I did my doctoral research on the evolution on enzyme expression in North American killifish at the University of Chicago. My postdoctoral work at the University of California, Irvine was on the evolution of phsyiological traits in fruitflies. After four years as an assistant professor, I decided to leave reasearch and focus on teaching. I found my best opportunity teaching at an independent high school in NJ. Independent schools have a flexible curriculum which allows to me to incorporate lessons on recent advances in biology and focus on topics I think are most relevant to today's students/future citizens.
