Introduction
Hermetiinae is largely defined by the speciose genus Hermetia. Hermetiine soldier flies are often large and colorful.
Characteristics
Hermetiinae is distinguished by the elongate and thickened eighth antennal flagellomere and absence of scutellar spines (Woodley 2001). The antennal state is less distinct in Chaetohermetia and Chaetosargus, whose antennae more resemble some Chrysochlorininae (Woodley 2001).
Relationship of Hermetiinae to Other Stratiomyidae
Hermetiinae shares a concave posterior surface of the head with Chrysochlorininae, Sarginae, and some Nemotelinae. This is a putative morphological synapomorphy of this group of subfamilies, or at least Hermetiinae,(Chrysochlorininae,Sarginae) according to Woodley (2001).
